What is mindfulness? What is meditation?

Mindfulness, or ‘insight meditation’, is the practice of being present moment-to-moment with acceptance, or without judgement. Sounds simple, but it ain’t easy. People practice mindfulness formally (a la seated on a cushion), and informally (say, not skipping over the beauty of a flower as one walks down a busy street). There are many forms of meditation, but the one most readily performed in mindfulness is a seated, often guided, focus on sensations as they’re happening.

The Benefits of Mindfulness

Research into the process and benefits of mindfulness make it clear: consistent practice offers profound benefits to your mind, body, and your relationships to others and yourself. Documented benefits include*:

  • Overall health: Strengthens the immune system and shortens illness recovery time.

  • Stress: Reduces stress and feelings of being overwhelmed.

  • Emotion regulation: Reduces anxiety, depression, and anger.

  • Interpersonal relations: Increases empathy and compassion.

  • Work output: Improves concentration, focus, and efficiency.

  • Communication skills: Enhances calmness and clarity in communication.

  • Decision-making: Improves long-term goal clarity and decisiveness.

  • Cognitive ability: Improves mental acuity and creativity.

Trigger warning.

Mindfulness asks us to be present with what is in the here and now - sensations in the body, thoughts as they come and go, sounds as they arise and fade away…What comes up when we invite our bodies to be still, calm, quiet, is often anything but.

I encourage you to explore guided meditations on your own (check out some of my teachers Tara Brach or Jack Kornfield for recorded sessions), but the deep benefits outlined above are achieved with the personalized support of a practiced guide. Enter, me. As a member of the Kindful sangha (meditation speak for ‘community’), I’m here with you throughout your workshop or class experience to help you process what’s triggered as we practice, and help guide you to resources that can help you heal.

These classes aren’t therapy, I’m not a therapist, but they are facilitated safe spaces to begin the process of increased wellbeing, of returning home.

So, let’s do this!

Every Wednesday evening (currently on a hiatus, returning February 17th) I guide a free 15-minute mini tour of mindfulness to calm the mind, and open the heart. There's no pressure. No commitment. Come as often as you want. And always, Come As You Are.
